Welcome to NeolithicClothing.com

Neolithic clothing project seeks to provide the general public a rough understanding of how Neolithic people of various cultures and times may have appeared. Each culture has been divided into four seasons, with three relevant tasks, such as winter hunting or summer harvest. The purpose is not to provide an in-depth analysis of each culture, but rather, to allow the average reader to gain a quick mental picture of ancient civilizations who lived long ago and existed for thousands of years.

Each illustration is based upon extensive research examining the artwork of the cultures, such as figurines, pottery, and jewelry, and an analysis of cultural trends, such as the layout of their villages. Since most Neolithic clothing has not survived, a significant amount of induction (an educated guess based on the evidence) has been required. We do not know how they dressed, but this does not mean we cannot make some reasonable guesses.

How do we justify our assumptions?

  • Examining there tools and materials
  • Considering their climate and environmental pressures
  • Comparing with more recent and accessible cultures with similar conditions
  • Reconstructing proposed clothing and then wearing it, living in it to see if it works
